Why I Left the School System to Embrace Montessori Homeschooling

My journey to Montessori homeschooling began in a traditional classroom, as a teacher and instructional coach, where I felt the constraints of professional hierarchies and rigid educational systems. I wanted more for my students—more curiosity, independence, and genuine love for learning. I began experimenting with Montessori principles long before I earned my credential, searching for a way to bring these values to life.

It wasn’t until I pursued my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction—often with my newborn daughter by my side—that I truly discovered the Montessori philosophy. Captivated by its child-centered approach, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about it. This journey led me to a new career chapter, where I obtained my Montessori Certification and taught at an AMS Montessori school where I developed systems for authentic implementation of The Montessori Method. Later, I became a Director of Teaching & Learning where I learned to adapt the systems that worked for me personally, into replicable systems that helped new, uncredentialed, Public Montessori teachers bring Montessori to life in their classrooms.

In 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was charged with supporting families with facilitating Montessori education at home. While “higher-ups” were determined to undermine parent’s efforts and teacher’s capabilities and insisted on standardizing children’s virtual education, I pushed for us to think outside the box.

As I continued to navigate between traditional education and Montessori, I realized that the most profound Montessori work was happening not in structured classrooms, but in homes—where parents could truly “follow the child” without the limitations of bureaucracy and standardized education policies. I saw an opportunity to empower parents to bring Montessori into their own homes, in a way that was practical, clear, and transformative.

In 2020, amidst health concerns, political shifts, and a growing resolve to not settle for standardized monte-something virtual learning & support parents in implementing Montessori authentically, I made the choice to leave my role as an administrator and fully embrace homeschooling my children.

This decision brought clarity and allowed me to create practical, effective systems tailored to real families—systems that honor Montessori principles while adapting to the dynamic nature of home life.

I never expected to fall in love with homeschooling – but the fulfillment I feel in adopting a slower, more balanced lifestyle and the privilege I’ve gained to be a more present parent & first-hand witness to my children’s education, milestones and childhood is unmatched to any amount of money or professional achievements. This joy I now get to live everyday is what I want for every family who desires it.

I launched The Montessori Teacher, LLC, to help parents like you navigate this path with confidence. My mission is to provide you with the clarity, tools, and support to transform your home into a Montessori haven where your child can thrive, and where you, as a parent / guide, feel empowered and prepared every step of the way.
