My Journey from Perfectionism to Progress
I totally understand the struggle—I’m an overachiever and a recovering perfectionist myself. When I first began my Montessori homeschooling journey, I felt immense pressure to have the perfect setup, with all the right materials, and a flawless daily routine. I was so caught up in how “Montessori-looking” everything was that I lost sight of the most important question:
Were my children truly engaged and learning?
It took some time, and a lot of self-reflection, to realize I was focusing on the wrong things.
Montessori is not about having a picture-perfect environment. As I often say, Montessori is an aesthetic, but it’s not just an aesthetic. It’s about creating a space where discovery, curiosity, and growth happen naturally. The essence of Montessori is in the process, not in creating an Instagram-perfect image.
Lessons Learned: Shifting Focus to Progress
When you focus on progress rather than perfection, you allow yourself and your child room to grow, make mistakes, and truly enjoy the journey of learning. Contrary to what many think, Montessori is not about doing everything “right” according to a rigid standard. It’s about observing your child, adapting to their needs, and being flexible in your approach.
This shift in mindset helps nurture a child’s love for learning, independence, and curiosity. When you let go of the idea that everything must be perfect, you create a more relaxed and dynamic environment where real learning can happen. You start to see that mistakes are opportunities for growth, not failures.
Why Focusing on Progress Makes a Difference
Focusing on progress over perfection benefits both you and your child. For your child, it means learning in an environment that evolves with their interests, needs, and developmental stages. For you, it means reducing the overwhelm and allowing space for flexibility and creativity in how you guide and support them. Instead of being bogged down by the fear of doing it wrong, you’re free to experiment, observe, and adjust.
Remember, Montessori isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about nurturing each child’s unique potential. By embracing progress, you foster a genuine love for learning that extends far beyond any classroom or homeschool setup.
